The conservation work of the 16th Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities between 2008-2011
During the period of 2008 -2011, the small number of experienced and well-trained staff of permanent art conservators, of the 16th Byzantine Antiquities, reinforced at times, with contract conservators worked on the following conservation works: The conservation of one hundred and forty-one (141) religious portable icons, apostolic parts, bimothyra, and icon stands along with fragments of wall paintings belonging to the collection of the Byzantine Museum of Kastoria and from monuments of both the city and the region of Kastoria, and regional unity of Florina. The conservation works at the wall paintings where completed in Panagia Koumpelidiki and Agioi Tris. Preventive conservation was carried out at the Taksiarches church in Apozari, at Agios Nikolaos of nun Eupraksia, at the Monastery of Panagia Mavriotissa, and at a ceiling wall painting of the mansion house of Nerantzi- Aivazi (1680) which houses the Folklore Museum of Kastoria. During this four years from 2008-2011 a number of conservation studies regarding the wall paintings of the following churches were conducted. These were of Agios Alipios, Agioi Apostoloi, Agios Georgios of Bouno, Agios Nikolaos of Kiritzi and Agios Ioannis the Prodromos. The above mentioned churches are all situated in the town of Kastoria. Due to the fact the Ephorate was prepared with mature conservation studies was able to enroll four conservation projects at the Regional Operational Programme of Macedonia-Thrace 2007-2013. Thus in 2011 conservation works on the following projects began: Restoration of the building and conservation of the wall paintings in Agioi Apostoloi Eleousis and Agios Nikolaos of Tzotza, Conservation of wall paintings and the temple at Eisodia of Theotokou Tsiatsiapa and conservation of wall paintings at Agios Alipios in the Oikonomou parish in Kastoria.
