Tsiapali Mariza, A Mansion is regenerated and two Churches reveal their Decoration
Summary
In the framework of the Western Macedonia Regional Operational Program 2007-2015, three projects were carried out by the 17th Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities: “The Restoration of Grigoriou Vourka’s Mansion at Kozani”, “The Conservation of the wall paintings of the church of the Dormition of the Virgin at Aiani” and “The Conservation of the wall paintings of the church of Hagios Nikolaos at Aiani”. The Vourka’s Mansion was built in 1743. Its restoration consists of the reconstruction of the internal walls in the basement and the upper floor and of the external walls of the north and south court yard. The floor made of stone was revealed in the basement. The doors, the ceilings and the floors of wood were replaced. The infrastructure of the wall paintings of the floor was secured and the cleaning of the surface has began. The church of the Dormition of the Virgin at Aiani was built in the twelfth century as an one aisle basilica and received a new narthex in the course of sixteenth century. The church of Ayios Nikolaos at Aiani was built and decorated in 1552 as an one aisle basilica. In both monuments, conservative works have been carried out in order to strengthen the wall paintings. A banding of mortar was applied wherever it was necessary to secure the edges of the paint layer. The previous facing was removed and the cleaning of the painted surface from the adhesion remains was started. The wall paintings preserve important parts of their colors in a rather good condition. The conservation treatment of the wall paintings of both monuments will carry on.
