Summary
In Greece, mainly in the northern side of the country, until the middle of the last century there were several buildings which were structured by mudbricks. The predominance of bricks and reinforced concrete made this material "outdated". Nowadays mudbrick buildings can be found in several residential complexes of greek territory, but the only organized residential complex with buildings entirely built with mudbricks found in Korestia, which are located in the limits of Kastoria and Florina prefectures. The study of this region and its mudbrick constructions will contribute to the understanding and interpretation of the presence of such buildings in our country. Considering this creations as an evidence of construction methods, spatial choices and perception of a culture, the current picture of abandonment of several settlements seems to be consistent with the rejection of the material from which they are built. The historical background of the mountainous and isolated region, the planning and typological/morphological characteristics of the built space, the monumental wealth and the relationship of the built and natural environment will be investigated. Also, the causes of decadence and abandonment of many of these settlements and the possibilities for their revival will be examined in order to establish a framework for sustainable development.
The work aims both to research this poorly researched mountain area and also to demonstrate that these structures are of particular architectural interest and an authentic sample of human creation, upsetting the view that are worthless. Will be trying to establish the uniqueness of Korestia landscape as a reflection of their culture so that it helps to make growth conditions.
Challenge is the possibility of appeal of today's image of abandonment and desertification of some settlements and the "obsolescence" of mudbrick structures. Nowdays, however, building methods using natural materials are displayed. The peculiarity of structured wealth of the area can be turned into perspective causes for the Korestia villages. In addition, will attempt to holistic tacling of the built environment of Korestia.
All parameters which influence the life in the region will be explored taking into account its data of the area in a new dialectic between space, natural and human environment and local community, presenting proposals for the integrated development of this place. The development framework aimed at achieving worth living stimulus conditions of local communities and is based on two equal pillars: tourism/cultural recovery and productive reconstruction of the region with parallel reorganization and strengthening of lean existing capacity through multidisciplinary actions. Legitimate concern is attracting new economically active population and services for economic, social and cultural revival while protecting the cultural heritage and tradition, combined with the preservation and proper management of natural resources.
Essentially, it will be studied as part of this work, the remarkable dwelling stock and the local heritage (rich architectural and cultural fields, mountain, forest, etc.) which can be transformed into a force that will hold their residents, will create conditions for reoccupation, productive activation and simultaneously will invigorate the sluggish attractiveness for visitors. The proposal is based on the simultaneous development of tertiary and primary sectors with the decisive role of an international interdisciplinary research center.
