Summary

The Ottoman Defter (Register of Taxes) number 237 of the Başbakanlık arşivi (Archives of the office of the Prime Minister) in İstanbul dated approximately to the year 1440 is a valuable source for about 70 villages situated in the Region of Kastoria (Northern Greece) and for the city of Kastoria itself. Discussed are the identification, localization and etymology of the names of the villages and of the quarters of Kastoria. In addition to the early Defter the Defter number 53 of Tapu ve Kadastro Genel Müdürlüğü) of 1568/69 is utilized as well.
