Summary
The fortifications of Ali Pasha in Kastoria Ali Pasha of Tepelena (1744-1822), son of Veli and Hamko, was the muslim Albanian ruler of Ioannina Pashalik during the period 1788-1822. In his early years, he became known as a notorious bandit in Northern Epirus, till he married the daughter of Pasha of Delvino and was placed Pasha of Trikala (1787) and Ioannina (1788). During his domination, Ioannina Pashalik transformed into a wealthy, well-organized state which extended its borders from Epirus to Albania, Macedonia and Rumelia. Kastoria, the old byzantine castle of mountainous Western Macedonia, came under his orders in 1796. After 1803, when Ali conquered the rebels of Souli, he strengthened the walls of Kastoria peninsula, constructed also many infrastructure works in the area, such as roads, bridges, aqueducts, hostelries, dervenia (road guard stations) and broadened the lake isthmus. Also, he built a 17m. tall tower (koula) behind the walls which was used as a clock-tower in the second half of 19th c. unto its demolition just before 1900.
