Περίληψη / Summary

Στο Βυζαντινό Μουσείο της Καστοριάς φυλάσσεται εικόνα μικρών διαστάσεων με την Κοίμηση της Θεοτόκου. Η εικονογραφική έμπνευση και διατύπωση της παράστασης απηχεί πρότυπα της πρώιμης Παλαιολόγειας τέχνης, όπως για παράδειγμα στο παρεκκλήσι του Αγίου Ευθυμίου από το ναό του Αγίου Δημητρίου Θεσσσαλονίκης. Η στενή εικονογραφική και καλλιτεχνική συγγένεια με ναούς της Καστοριάς, τον Άγιο Νικόλαο του Κυρίτζη και τον Άγιο Γεώργιο του Βουνού, εγγράφει την εικόνα στο περιβάλλον του εργαστηρίου του τελευταίου ναού και τη χρονολογεί μεταξύ των ετών 1365-1385.

Tsigaridas Euthymius, Icon of the Dormition of the Virgin in the Byzantine Museum of Kastoria.

This article publishes an icon from a church at Kastoria now on display in the Byzantine Museum of this town (Fig. 1). It is a small (41 x 65.5 cm.) icon of the Dormition of the Virgin, which is in a good state of preservation, despite overpainting in places and local losses to the painted surface. From an iconographie point of view, the Kastoria icon of the Dormition of the Virgin does not follow the typical iconographie scheme of the subject, but is organised differently, since the group of apostles is not depicted either side of the Virgin's death bed, as normally, but is placed entirely at the right and densely arranged, while the space at the left is occupied only by a group of angels, also densely arranged. The Kastoria icon reflects iconographie models of the Middle Byzantine period found in Kastoria (Ayioi Anargyroi, Panayia Mavriotissa), and above all works of art of the first Palaiologan period, such as the wall-painting of the Dormition of the Virgin in the chapel of Ayios Efthymios (1302/3) of the church of Ayios Dimitrios in Thessaloniki (Fig. 3). On the other hand, the direct iconographie and artistic affinity that may be detected between the Kastoria icon and works dating from the second half of the 14th century (Fig. 4), such as, principally, the Dormition of the Virgin in the church of Ayios Georgios tou Vounou at Kastoria (Fig. 2) enables us to assign the icon to the workshop or the close circles of the workshop responsible for the decoration of the church of Ayios Georgios, and therefore to date it to the two decades 1365-1385.
