Summary

Animals associated with imagery of the earth or hunting are common in 6th-century mosaics. In the Heraclea mosaic, however, they refer to constellations and hence the seasons. The deer, bull and lion resemble Aries, Taurus and Leo. The red dog depicts Canis Major.
