Tsiapali Mariza,
The wall paintings of the church of Agioi Anargyroi at Servia Kozani

The church of Agioi Anargyroi stands on a hill at Servia, Kozani. It belongs to the one-aisle type church with a rectangular apse in the east side. It was built in the first half of the 11th century.
It is decorated with wall paintings, which are damaged by the time and the human factor. The frescoes are depicted in two layers. The first layer is partially preserved under the second one, which is visible in the church nowadays. Fragments of the vestments of hierarchs are preserved at the bottom of the apse. It can be dated from the 11 th to 13th century.
In the east wall, we discern in the apse the Virgin in full-length. Below, the scene of Melismos is almost ruined, but the hierarchs are preserved. Above the Ascension is depicted, while the Annunciation is divided in the right and left side of the apse.
In the north and south wall, the iconographic program is developed in three successive bands. The lower register is covered with the theme of the podea and individual figures of full-length saints. The one immediately above displays narrative scenes which include the cycle of the Life and Passion of Christ. In the upper register fragments of the prophets as busts are preserved. In the west wall the iconographic program is developed in two registers. The lower is decorated with theme of the podea and individual figures of fulllength saints, while the upper with the scenes of the Transfiguration and the Dormition of the Virgin.
The second layer is painted by two artists. They follow the iconographic types of the Palaeologan period and of those which were illustrated in the churches in Macedonia. Furthermore, they incorporate iconographic details from works of the Cretan School and from the so-called "workshop of Kastona".
The iconographic arrangement of scenes presents clarity and simplicity. They aren't crowded and they haven't narrative, picturesque or imaginative details. Despite the fact that the figures are barely moved and rather stylized, their emotions and feelings are underlined successfully. They stand out with simple, linear or curved geometrically drapery.
The second layer is dated in 1510 approximately.
