Naxidou Eleonora, From Ohrid to Salonica: Margaritis Dimitsas and his ‘Macedonian Itinerary’

PDF

Margaritis Dimitsas (1829 – 1903), born in Ohrid, was a teacher and prolific writer, whose migratory course mostly through Ottoman ruled Macedonia finally took him to Athens, the capital of the newborn Greek nation-state, where he made a career in education. Through his many books, essays, and articles on history and geography, he strove to demonstrate that the ancient geographer Strabo was right in his assumption that Macedonia was part of Greece. This paper aims to shed light on certain aspects of this understudied personality, focusing on the following two intertwined issues: his ethnic origins vs. his national self-identification, and his teaching pursuits in Greek schools which drove him from his native town of Ohrid to Thessaloniki.
