Summary
Sarrigiannidou Chara, Gkimourtzina Amalia, Observations on the Painted Decoration of the Church of Hagios Nikolaos of Tzotza in Kastoria after the Completion of the Conservation

The church of Hagios Nikolaos of Tzotza is located in the north part of Kastoria, in the Apozari quarter. Painted decoration, which date approximately to 1360-1380, is preserved in the largest part of the east and north walls in the interior of the church, as well as in small sections of the east and north facade of the church. In July 2011, after the integration of the project “Restoration and conservation of the wall paintings of the church of Hagios Nikolaos of Tzotza in Kastoria” to the “Operational Programme Macedonia-Thrace 2007-2013” NSRF Western Macedonia, the restoration of the church, as well as the conservation of the wall paintings, began under the supervision of the 16th Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities. The conservation employed appropriate intervention methods and approved materials in order to rescue and highlight the aesthetic and historic value of the painted decoration of the monument. The conclusion of the conservation works revealed new and interesting elements about the iconographic programme of the church, such as the strong presence of monks and anchorites on the north wall.
