Skreka Andromachi, New data for the archaeological site of Diocletianoupolis near Argos Orestiko, Kastoria
Summary
This paper deals with the new data, that came to light after the excavation research that took place at the NW part of Diocletianoupoli’ s walls near Argos Orestiko, Kastoria. The archaeological survey was part of a project that had to do with the restoration and enhancement of a circuit 220 m. length, 2.50m. width, 1.50-2.00m. height and four towers during the execution of the Regional Operation Programme of Macedonia- Thrace 2007-2013. They were studied the materials, the construction method and the design of the fortification which was related with the geomorphology of the region and follows the principles of the Hellenistic Period. Its construction was part of Diocletian’ s fortification activity (284-305) and is the only one known in Greece which hasn’ t used sections or spolia of an earlier fortification. The towers must have four storeys and external projection about 5 meters. A simple gate without flanking towers 3.70m. width was found in the middle of the first interval section (between the first and second tower) which used for the immediate transportation of the population and the barracks from the western fields into the fortress. Furthermore, horizontal and vertical walls to the inner courtyard were excavated which define spaces with auxiliary use. They were built after the fortification but not much later and their life was parallel with that of the wall. The barbaric invasions of the late 4th and 5th century destroyed part of the walls which were gradually abandoded as the life in the town, too.
