Tsiapali Mariza, Restoration of the ascetic cave of Osios Νikanoras in Zavorda of Grevena
Summary
The ascetic cave of osios Nikanoras is situated in the southwest side of Kallistrato mountain. The monument existed before the foundation of the monastery of Zavorda which is located in a small distance of it.The ascetic cave is divided in three parts. The upper one is formed as a church dedicated to Saint George and belongs to the first building phase. The second building phase of the ascetic cave is dated in 1793. The church was built as a single aisle barrel vaulted basilica. It is covered with wall paintings dated to the late 15th century. In the southern and western walls an earlier layer of wall painting is revealed in a rather bad condition of preservation. It is dated to the early 15th century. Extended works for the restoration of the external walls, the repair of the roof, the conservation of the wall paintings and the laying out of the surroundings were carried out. The works were paid by the project of the construction of Ilarionas’ dam. The access to the ascetic cave remains difficult but its restoration underlines the aesthetical and historical values of the monument.
