Τσιλιπάκου Αγαθονίκη, Οι τοιχογραφίες του καθολικού της Ι. Μ. Κοίμησης Θεοτόκου στο Σπήλαιο Γρεβενών

Tsilipakou Agathoniki D., The Wall Paintings of the Dormition Monastery at Spilaio Grevena
Summary

The wall paintings were executed by different artistic workshops, at the monastery’s expense. The sanctuary (1640/41) by the painter Demetrios, working with one or two partners who probably came from the Grammos region (Grammosta-Linotopi). The east part of the nave as far as the choir was painted in 1649/50 by the painter Nikolaos from Linotopi and his partner Ioannis. The rest of the nave and the narthex were decorated in 1658 by the painters Michalis and Ilias from, respectively, Zerma (Epirus) and Borboutsiko (Kastoria). The work of the three different workshops presents an overall unity that is due on the one hand to the eclectic tendency of the 17th century in the choice of iconographic types and details and on the other to the fact that all these painters came from the same area, the Grammos-Kastoria region, and therefore had largely similar artistic background. In their compositions combine elements from the earlier 14th and 15th century Palaeologan tradition, transferred by the local artistic workshops of the 16th and early 17th century, with iconographic and stylistic norms of both the North-western Greek and the Cretan Schools and rare details from the older Byzantine and Late Byzantine tradition prevalent in greater Macedonia and Serbia. Some of their compositions are original creations intended to transmit particular symbolisms and theological doctrine.
