Drougou Stella – Kallini Chrysanthi – Trakatelli Lydia-Antonia, The Acropolis of the ancient city at Kastri near Polyneri in the Grevena Prefecture - The traces of ancient Tympheans
Summary

The short excavation at ‘Kastri’ near Polyneri/ Alatopetra has brought to light the remains of an organised and fortified citadel of another as yet unknown ancient city, which lies almost in the centre of the Tymphaea region. According to the findings so far, the uncovered section of the organised citadel includes stone buildings, such as the astyle temple, the south stoa and a number of other buildings. Two large gates have been located in the enclosure. Chronologically, the acropolis complex functioned from 300 BC up until the end of the Macedonian kingdom (168 BC). and the mid-2nd c. BC, when the acropolis was destroyed by war and was never rebuilt.
The site is of great importance as it covers a large area and has revealed indications of a systematic building program, while the portable finds also support this finding. Further excavation of the site is expected to reveal a great deal more about the area and its importance. Although the difficult natural conditions and difficulties of excavating such a site have hindered a proper evaluation of the finds, it is clear that investigations need to be continued.
